Flyers look for first points on home soil

After a narrow defeat to promotion chasing AFC Portchester, Winchester City Flyers will be hoping to get their first points on Sunday at home to Badshot Lea.

The Surrey side are also without a point after two games, following defeats against Reading and AFC Portchester in the Southern Region Premier Division.

Badshot started positively against the former Women's Super League, Reading, as they took the lead in the 15th minute through Gemma Luke.

It didn't last long, though, as the Royals hit back with goals for Tyra Wilson and Poppy Whitburn to lead at half-time.

Whitburn scored a second after the break and Georgia Hayes scored late on to make it 4-1.

The following week, Portchester struck three times in the second-half to win 3-0 against Badshot.

Lauren Aitken scored twice off the bench and captain Gemma Hillier also bagged her first goal of the season.

The defeats add more disappointment onto the poor competitive run for Badshot.

Sunday's visitors last recorded a competitive win on February 25th 2024 with a 3-2 win over Eastleigh in the Community (Sholing).

The Flyers have had an extra week to rest with no game on the 7th due to the odd number of teams in the Premier Division.

Emma Pearmine's side will be looking to right the wrongs from the 3-2 defeat against Portchester.

The Flyers went 2-0 down in the first-half, Sarah Butterworth and Millie Bradbury found the back of the net as the home side dominated the first 45.

Winchester struck back in the second-half Libby Wilkinson scored from a goalkeeper mistake before Laura da Silva showed some skill for the equaliser.

The visitors were the stronger as the game headed to the close but Portchester's Betty Barron-Clark struck on a throughball to seal the points.

The last meetings between the two sides last season ended in two wins for the Flyers and the previous time Badshot won was on the opening day of the 2023/24 season.
