Preview | Flyers vs Southampton Women’s

Winchester go again against former National League side

Another tough test lies in wait for Winchester City Flyers as they take on second-place Southampton Women’s FC.

Following the narrow defeat to promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers, Emma Pearmine’s side will be looking to right the wrongs from last Sunday’s outing.

Winchester flew into the break with a 210 lead over the league leaders, thanks to two goals in two minutes from Chelsie Hay.

Tactics looked to be spot on from the Flyers, who kept Wycombe at bay and took their chances; however, it was the reverse in the second-half as the Wanderers scored three times to seal a comeback win and remain unbeaten.

It was Winchester’s second defeat of the season and saw them drop to sixth with the table still tight in these early stages of the Southern Region Premier Division campaign.

Five points above the Flyers sit Southampton, who were relegated from the FA Women’s National League Division One South West after a couple of difficult seasons.

Southampton have been having a good campaign and started life in the Southern Region with a 4-2 win over Fleet Town.

It was the first win for new manager Gav Calder and kick-started a season of rebuilding for the south coast club.

In front of goal, Southampton have been in fine form, scoring in all 10 competitive games this year, averaging 3.1 goals per game.

Leading the line is striker Chloe Ball, who has scored seven goals in 10 games, and she is one of 12 different goal scorers for Sunday’s visitors.

From a defensive point of view, they have kept two clean sheets, the most recent coming in a 7-0 win over Badshot Lea last time out, and concede on average 1.7 goals per game.

One thing any observing statistician would have picked up is the likelihood of goals from both teams.

The two sides haven’t met in the league since 2017, when Southampton won promotion to the National League

Competitive meetings have been few and far between as league standings have usually separated the two sides.

Reserves and Reds in action

After picking up their first league win of the season, the Reserves take on Hampshire County Division Two side Alton in the Invitation Cup.

In the previous round, the Flyers Reserves were awarded a win as Solent Sports Rangers pulled out.

A win on Sunday will secure their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

It’s a home tie in the league for the Reds, they host Gosport Falcons, looking to record back-to-back wins after a period of slight inconsistency.

Last time out, the Flyers Reds won 4-3 over AFC Varsity Reserves, a win that kept them second, four points behind the leaders Rushmoor Community with a game in hand.
