Winchester City Flyers held off Denham United in the dying moments to win 3-2 in the Southern Region League Cup.
The Flyers stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first-half thanks to a Shayne Prasad goal that was sandwiched between a Chelsie Hay brace.
Denham scored twice late in the game, but it wasn’t enough for the Buckinghamshire side.
Manager Emma Pearmine once again utilised her squad, making three changes to the starting line-up, bringing in Hannah Chalk, Emily McDonough and Lauren Sayler.
Winchester flew out of the traps from the whistle, and the first clear shot at goal fell to Kayleigh Tonks, who blazed her shot over the bar.
The hosts had a small spell of pressure, but Sayler dealt with all the crosses into the box.
Denham’s goalkeeper, Zara Butt, denied Prasad with a great block before she was picking the ball out of the net a minute later.
Charlie Snelling overturned possession, passing short to Emma Whitlock to launch a long ball over the defence for Prasad to chase down.
The winger raced away from the defence into the box, where Butt came off her line, but Prasad unselfishly squared for Hay to tap home the opener.
Three minutes later, the lead was doubled.
Hay and Tonks put the pressure on the Denham back line, and then Prasad charged down Lauren Cox to nick the ball and chip the keeper from the edge of the box.
The goals didn’t fluster the hosts, who had yet to lose in 90 minutes so far this season.
Denham had two good chances blocked by Sayler and Lydia Moulding before the keeper comfortably claimed another shot.
In the 34th minute, Hay bagged her brace.
Tonks drove out of her own half to begin the attack to thread the ball through to Hay, who played a neat one-two with Prasad before the striker beat the defender to fire low for the third of the game.
Sayler and Moulding were called into action again before the break to keep the score at 3-0.
United came out the brighter of the two sides as Sayler blocked an early shot.
Whitlock saw a good corner headed wide by Prasad before she was back in defence, denying Rebecca Horwood the chance to cross.
As the game carried on, Sayler was the busier of the two keepers; she claimed several crosses and shots.
Into the final ten minutes, Denham got themselves back into the game.
Pia Davis picked up the ball, shrugged off Charlotte Warhurst, and held off Moulding as she burst into the box and neatly tucked the ball past Sayler.
Brogran Moore forced Sayler into a superb fingertip save, pushing the ball onto the crossbar, to deny Denham a second just a minute after their first.
In the 89th minute, things got nervy for the Flyers when Liana Horwood headed home a corner at the back post.
Unfortunately for United, there wasn’t enough time for them to grab a third to keep their League Cup hopes alive as the referee blew the final whistle.
The Flyers progress into the Second Round of the League Cup, while Denham will now go into the Chairman’s Cup.
Next up for Winchester is a home game against the unbeaten league leaders Wycombe Wanderers on Sunday 9th November.
