Winchester City Flyers were knocked out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup following a 4-0 loss to higher opposition, Gwalia United.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Flyers, who were dominant for much of the first-half, but a flurry of chances wasn’t taken and a quality moment from United’s Tia Asker saw them ahead at the break.
There were more opportunities for Winchester in the second-half; however, three goals – including two in injury-time – meant it was the Welsh side who progressed into the next round.
Following their 1-0 win over Bournemouth Sports Reserve, Emma Pearmine was looking to cause a cup set over FA Women’s National League Southern Premier side Gwalia – formerly known as Cardiff City.
The game began at a fast pace, with Winchester not letting the two-division difference affect their ability to frustrate their opponents.
Opportunities were carved out by both sides, with Laura da Silva and Kayleigh Tonks both unable to get the ball out from under their feet for early shots.
Manon Pearce had a scuffed shot collected by Ellie Parker, while Daisy Ackerman caused problems with her speed and strength down the left.
The first real shot of the game came in the 13th minute, and it was the opener.
Gwalia played the ball out from the back and, within two passes, had sent Asker through where she managed to shuffle away from Wylie to curl the ball into the top corner.
It was an early goal that could have seen the visitors take full control of the game, but the Flyers hit straight back.
United were caught too high up the pitch at an attacking corner as Kayleigh Tonks picked out Chelsie Hay, who had two-thirds of the pitch to drive towards goal.
The striker managed to get a shot away from inside the box; however, goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland made a huge save to deny Winchester the equaliser.
Just a minute later, Haaland was called into action, this time denying Lydia Moulding’s bullet header from a great Emma Whitlock freekick.
The spell of pressure continued as the resulting corner saw Shayne Prasad tripped in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Hay stepped but lacked conviction with her penalty, and Haaland saved to keep her side ahead.
Those in attendance were treated to end-to-end football as both teams pushed forward and the defences stood their ground.
Laura Vokes got too much height on a freekick from the edge of the area before Tonks also lifted a shot over.
A quick move from Gwalia saw Asker break the lines ,forcing Ellie Parker into a great save.
Heading into half-time the visitors held just a one-goal lead.
Winchester took their performance into the second-half and, within five minutes of the restart, had Tonks pick out da Silva, who couldn’t keep her effort on target.
The Flyers would rue the chances they had missed when Gwalia were awarded a suspect freekick nearly halfway inside the Winchester half in the 73rd minute.
Bethan McGowan sent the ball deep into the box, where Ellie Mai Sanford's run wasn’t tracked, and she could fire the ball past Parker.
Hay had one last strike in the 85th minute, but Haaland claimed the shot.
Eventually, fitness did play a part heading into injury-time as Gwalia struck twice to make it 4-0.
Pearce broke through the defence, took the ball around Parker to slot in the third, before Eliza Collie also raced through to net the fourth and wrap up the win.
A disappointing scoreline for the Flyers, but a performance to be proud of and build on throughout the season.
