Chelsie Hay’s goal-scoring form continued as her first-half brace helped Winchester City Flyers win 5-2 over Abingdon United Development in the Southern Region League Cup.

Charlie Snelling broke the deadlock before Hay scored twice, either side of Sian Wylie’s second goal of the season, to put the Flyers in pole position at half-time.

Substitute Emily McDonough added a fifth in the second-half and despite Abingdon scoring twice, Winchester booked their place in the semi-finals for the second year running.

Emma Pearmine made two changes to her starting line-up to give goalkeeper Lauren Sayler a start, while Sian Wylie came in for the unavailable Shayne Prasad.

The Flyers dictated the tempo from the off, and Hay nearly had the first goal within the opening five minutes.

With 10 minutes on the clock, Winchester did get their goal.

Captain Emma Whitlock whipped in a dangerous corner that vice-captain Snelling got on the end of to ensure the ball crossed the line.

Eight minutes later, the Flyers doubled their lead.

Laura Vokes released Emily Wernham down the left channel before squaring to an unmarked Chelsie Hay to slip it past the Abingdon keeper.

Winchester kept the pressure up against the Division One North side and soon found themselves 3-0 up.

Whitlock turned provider again as her diagonal ball found Wylie to race on into the box for a neat finish low and across the goal.

McDonough and Tilly Plummer were introduced not long after, and the latter had an immediate impact.

Snelling and Whitlock had been controlling things in the middle before the ball found Plummer to curl a first-time ball into the path of Hay.

The striker controlled the ball before chipping the keeper for her second and Winchester’s fourth of the game inside 32 minutes.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic as Sayler was forced to dive to her right and deny a goal for United.

At the break, Winchester had a commanding lead and their eyes set on making the semi-final once again.

Three more changes were made at half-time as Ella Hughes, Annie Northwood and Eloise Powell-Rowland were introduced.

Northwood nearly added her name to the scoresheet within minutes but had her effort blocked.

Five minutes after the restart, McDonough added a fifth

Whitlock played in Kayleigh Tonks, where the keeper blocked her shot only for the rebound to find McDonough and net her first goal of the season.

Abingdon pulled a goal back thanks to April England, who pounced when an error at the back was made and took the ball around Sayler to finish into an empty net.

More chances came and went for Winchester with Hughes, Northwood, Plummer and Tonks all missing out.

Sayler was soon forced into a good save as Abingdon struck from the edge of the box.

Momentum had switched as the second-half continued, the visitors found the confidence to generate more attacks, and it paid off with five minutes of normal time to play.

Chloe Forrester fired in on the angle to give United a second consolation goal in a game that at one point had looked long gone for them.

The final whistle came as the Flyers picked up the win to book a place in the League Cup Semi-final.
